Groups

Set Up Groups in Brightspace

You can divide you students into small groups in Brightspace. You can then restrict   course item for a specific group.

  1. From the top Navigation Panel, click on Course Tools, and then from the drop-down menu select Edit Course
  2. Under Learner Management, click on Groups.

  3. Under Manage Groups, click on New Category.

  1. Under Category Information, fill out Category Name. You can also give the category a description if you like

  1. Under Enrollment Type, choose which option you require.

  • # of Groups – No Auto Enrollments. This will create the number of groups specified. You will then need to enroll students manually. 
  • Groups of #. The system will automatically enroll students into groups based upon the specified number of students per group. 
  • # of Groups. The system will automatically enroll students into groups based upon the specified number of groups. 
  • Groups of # - Self Enrollment. The system will automatically create the correct number of groups, specified on the number of students. Students will have to enroll themselves in a group. 
  • # of Groups – Self Enrollment. The system will create the number of groups specified. Students will have to enroll themselves in a group. 
  • # of Groups, Capacity of # - Self Enrollment. This option allows you to limit how many groups there are and set a limit of how many students can be in each group. Students will have to enroll themselves in a group.

 

Note: Once you set the Enrollment type for the Group Category and Save it, it can not be changed.

 

  1. Based on the Enrollment type you have chosen, you must set the Number of Groups or/and Users.

  1. Based on the Enrollment type you have chosen, have different Advanced setting that you can set for your Category
  • If you Selected # of Groups – No Auto Enrollments enrollment type, you should see the following option

  • If you select Auto Enrollment enrollment type, you should see the following option.

  • If you Selected Self Enrollment enrollment type, you should see the following option.

  1. You can also setup Assignments and Discussion Board directly when you are setting up the category. You can find those options under Additional Options.

  1. Click Save, one everything is set up.
  2. Now you should see a list of the groups. Click on a Group name to edit that Group.

  1.  Under Edit Group, you can change the Group Name and the Group Code

  1. For manually enrolling the users, click on Enroll Users

  1. Mark the checkbox to the right of each Student's name that you wish to add to the Group, then click Save

You are all down now. To have a Groups link put on the navigation bar for students to access, contact the Software and Application Support Centre

Email Students from Brightspace

You have the option to Email students directly from Brightspace. You can Email you whole class at once or you can Email individual student(s).

  1. From the top navigation panel, go to Course Tools > Classlist.
  2. Click on Email Classlist, A new page titled Email Classlist will open.
  3. Click on Send Email
  4. All the Email address will be added automatically under bcc. Format your Email and click on Send

  2. Select the checkbox beside the student(s) you want to Email.
  3. From the top of the students list, click on Email .
  4. Students’ Email addresses will be automatically added under bcc. Format your Email and click on Send
