Teaching Through Assessment in the Virtual Environment

Presenters: Jennifer Green (Manager of Student Accessibility) and Paul Maher (Educational Developer - Digital Learning)

Alternative or authentic assessments are those which are tied closely to specific goals and objectives and often replicate “real world” dilemmas. These approaches to assessment design incorporate the application of process with higher-order cognitive activity.  Incorporating the use of alternative or authentic assessment is a holistically rigorous process that requires students to draw upon a repertoire of skills and knowledge to solve problems. The result is the ability to gauge a broad picture of students learning. Particularly relevant in a virtual environment, alternative and authentic assessment proactively supports academic integrity while providing students with the foundation to successfully meet course outcomes and prepare them for life outside of academia.  As a result, authentic assessment supports Inclusive pedagogy, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Culturally responsive pedagogy.

This session will engage with the following questions:

  • How can authentic and alternative assessment support principles of accessibility and inclusion?

  • What are the benefits of this assessment practice in terms of remote teaching, learner engagement, and academic integrity?

This webinar will include time for participants to identify and review ways faculty can implement, or further develop, the use of alternative and authentic assessment into coursework.
