Authentic assessment can provide meaningful and tangible opportunities for students to learn while also offering faculty accurate perspectives into the knowledge and skill development of the student. Particularly relevant in a virtual environment, the practice of authentic assessment can support students to meet course outcomes in situations that not only assess their learning of course requirements, but prepare them for life outside of academia. This form of assessment is holistically rigorous and requires students to draw upon a repertoire of skills and knowledge to solve problems, providing faculty with numerous opportunities to thoroughly evaluate the student’s learning. Features associated with authentic assessment include tasks which are multifaceted and complex. As a result, authentic assessment supports Inclusive pedagogy, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Culturally responsive pedagogy.
This session will engage with following questions:
How can this form of assessment support principles of accessibility and inclusion?
Are there any benefits to authentic assessment in terms of remote teaching, learner engagement and academic integrity?
This session will also cover some practical approaches to implementing authentic learning or assessment for your course.
