What is JumpStart?

JumpStart provides students with an introduction to learning at Saint Mary’s University. The program is available to all incoming students free of charge.

Topics covered: 

• Profile of a university student 

• How to critically think like a university student  

• How to write with heart and put your personal stamp on writing 

• The importance of avoiding plagiarism and cheating

What will I learn?

Participants in Jump Start will:

• Be introduced to academic platforms and software, including Brightspace, Teams, Outlook, and Zoom

• Reflect on and discuss your academic journey

• Find out what’s expected of you in your courses

• Understand the importance of academic integrity

• Practise important academic communications skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking

• Learn to access important academic supports that will help you throughout your university studies

• Meet with other in-coming SMU students

• Receive a notation on their Co-Curricular Record
