Small Teaching Strategies to Maintain Engagement
Wednesday, August 24 | 11:00 am to 12:00 pm | Click here to join via Zoom
Facilitators: Paul Maher & Jonathan Shaw
Learning activities within your class can fulfill a number of important functions to support student learning and maintain engagement. These activities, as James Lang argues in his 2016 book Small Teachings: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning, can be easily incorporated in any classroom.
Prediction, retrieval practice, and spacing (Using a polling tool)
Reflection and metacognition (Exit slips)
Leveraging peer-to-peer interaction to support making connections (Small group activities)
Brainstorming to catalyse divergent thinking (Padlet)
Mind-mapping to facilitate convergent thinking and making connections
This session will feature an active component and provide an opportunity for participants to share experiences, insights, and challenges. If format or timing does not suit, consider instead a one-on-one consultation with Paul Maher.
