Call for Contributions
How identities interact with both teaching and learning is one of the five, complex, “grand challenges” for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning that has been identified by ISSOTL, the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (2024).
This webinar seeks to bring together colleagues from around the world to better understand how personal experiences, perceptions of self, and demographic characteristics such as gender, race and socio-economic status shape experiences of teaching and learning. The aim of this webinar is to explore the role of identity in teaching and learning in the interactions between educators and students, among students, and between students and what is being learned.
Contributions showcasing empirical research, presenting theoretical frameworks or reflecting on experience, including the sharing of good practice are encouraged. Contributions are welcome from academic colleagues, educational/faculty developers, professional service colleagues and students. Joint presentations are welcome.
Contributions, in English, need to be in one of two formats: either a 15 minute paper or a 5 minute lightning talk. The webinar will be held via Zoom and will include time for questions and discussion. You are expected to provide slides in advance, and to present live online.
If you would like to contribute, please complete the form by 12:00 noon GMT on Monday November 17, 2025. You will need to provide a title and an abstract (max 250 words) and specify which format you would prefer to use to present. Each proposal will be reviewed using the following criteria:
1. Its relevance to the Grand Challenges for SoTL #4
2. The extent to which it demonstrates an understanding of SoTL issues and/or existing scholarship in the field
3. The contribution the paper/talk can make to the understanding of identity in teaching and/or learning
You will be informed by Thursday December 18, 2025 if your submission has been accepted. The webinar will be held at 13:00-14:00 GMT on Thursday January 29, 2026
