[Winter Program] Sapporo University (“SU”) Winter Program (February 12-22, 2025)

Sapporo University is offering a Winter Program in February 2025. Have a unique winter experience through learning Japanese language and culture in Sapporo City, the heart of Hokkaido, Japan!

The program welcomes students from Sapporo University’s partner schools around the world! The program will run with 12-20 participants (if fewer than 12 students apply, the program will be cancelled).

Duration

12-22 February 2025 (11days)

Program (Japanese) Level

This program is open to students who can read and write Hiragana and Katakana.

Contents of Program   

• Japanese language classes : 90 min × 17 sessions (25.5 hours)

• Japanese Salon Conversations or activity with students and/ or Japanese language volunteers : 90 min × 1 session

• Japanese culture experience : 180 min. × 2 times

• Off campus bus tour : 2 Days 1 Night 

Transfer credits:

Students may be able to earn credits to the extent that those credits are applicable to the program requirements of your SMU degree. Please meet with your academic advisor of your program (visit https://www.smu.ca/academics/academic-advising.html) to see if any of your remaining degree requirements can be completed at another university. If your advisor confirms that there is room for transfer credits in your degree, you will request approval to take courses for transfer credits by submitting a Letter of Permission Request Form (found here https://www.smu.ca/academics/student-forms.html) to the SMU Records Office as soon as your acceptance is confirmed.

If academic credits are earned, students are not assessed SMU tuition for the transfer credit hours.

Alternatively, if not transferring credits, the student may receive recognition for extra-curricular experiences through the Co-Curricular Record (see here).

Program Fee   

JPY 330,000 (approx. CAD$3050) payable to the host university.

This program fee includes tuition, textbooks, observation/experience fee, and accommodation (at Sapporo University Seminar House on campus, incl breakfast).

Not included in this fee are meals, airfare, insurance, transportation in Japan, daily expenses, and $100 SMU Study abroad admin fee.

Available for Canadian citizens and Canadian Permanent Resident Card holders in the undergraduate program.

Target group:

Undergraduate students in good academic standing who will have completed 1 year of Bachelor studies by the end of Fall 2024. The program is open to students who have studied Japanese.

Immigration:

Citizens of certain countries are required to apply for a short-term visa before entering Japan, while visas are waived for others. Normally, Canadian citizens are not required to obtain a visa for stays of up to 90 days. The 3-week program consists of Japanese Language (40.5 hours), Japan Studies (3 hours), Workshop (7.5 hours), Field Studies (7.5 hours), and Presentation (6 hours).

A certificate and grade report will be issued upon completion of the program.

Students may be able to earn credits to the extent that those credits are applicable to the program requirements of your SMU degree. Announcement from Rikkyo University

Saint Mary’s partner institution in Japan, Rikkyo University, will offer an in-person Japanese language program.

Dates: Jan 9-Jan 26, 2024 

The program consists of 46.7 hours of classroom instruction on Japanese language plus 25 hours of lectures on Japanese culture and society, including field trips. See the attached flyer.

Costs:

306,000yen (approx. CAD$2900) payable to the host institution to cover tuition and administrative fee. The program cost does not include transportation costs (to and within Japan), or any other miscellaneous living expenses for the duration of the program.

[Summer Program] TMU Summer Program on Japanese & Japan Studies in 2023

Tokyo Metropolitan University is offering “TMU Summer Program on Japanese & Japan Studies in 2023” from July 4 to July 18, 2023.

The 2-week program consists of 42 hours of Japanese language study, and 13.5 hours of Japan Studies.  

Students will be evaluated according to class participation, oral presentation and quizzes.  

A certificate will be issued upon completion of the program.

July 4 (Tuesday) –July18 (Tuesday), 2023 

〇 Japanese Language Placement Test  

Students will be allocated to classes based on their Japanese language level according “SPOT90” test. 

Before applying the program, students will have to take “SPOT90” test with free of charge.

[Summer Program] International Joint Summer Seminar, Japan 2023

University of Niigata Prefecture is hosting their annual Summer Seminar in Niigata, Japan, once again after three years of online seminars due to COVID. The dates of the Seminar are August 6-10 2023. Interested students should email Global@smu.ca by May 19 2023.

[Summer Program] Online Short-Term Intensive Japanese Program (2023)

Saint Mary’s partner institution in Japan, Rikkyo University, will offer two online Japanese language courses.

Dates: 

Summer 1: July 10-July 19, 2023 

Summer 2: July 24-August 2, 2023 

Each courses consists of 25 hours of instruction plus virtual cultural activities. See the attached flyer.

Costs:

50,000yen (approx. CAD$500) payable to the host institution to cover tuition and administrative fee.

Kansai Gaidai University Asian Studies Program Japanese Language Courses

Kansai Gaidai University is offering an online program in which SMU students can take up to two courses in winter 2023 (Jan 25-May 26 2023). Tuition is paid at the host university. Students may receive academic credits towards their SMU degree, provided that those transfer credits can be approved beforehand via the Letter of Permission Request Form submitted to the SMU Records Office.

THE 2023 JAPANESE GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIP RECOMMENDED BY RIKKYO UNIVERSITY

Rikkyo University, SMU’s partner institution in Japan, is accepting applications from SMU graduate students for the MEXT Scholarship to study at Rikkyo University.

MEXT is funded by the Japanese government and covers economy airfare, tuition and monthly stipends of 143,000yen (approx. CAD$1400) for the 2023-24 academic year.

Applicants should be proficient in the language used in their study or research at Rikkyo University. Their graduate programs in Japanese are found at https://english.rikkyo.ac.jp/academics/#Graduate, and those in English are found at https://english.rikkyo.ac.jp/academics/english.html#Graduate.

They are then expected to apply for extension of the MEXT scholarship and successfully take and pass the entrance exam of one of Rikkyo University’s Graduate Schools, to proceed as a regular degree-seeking student from April 2025 at the latest.

Tokyo Metropolitan University is offering the Japanese and Japan Studies Program in Tokyo, Japan, from January 11-27 2023. The program is open to students with no knowledge of Japanese as well as to those with an elementary-level knowledge. This program is offered in-person.
