Announcement from Rikkyo University

Saint Mary’s partner institution in Japan, Rikkyo University, will offer an in-person Japanese language program.

 

Dates: Jan 9-Jan 26, 2024 

 

The program consists of 46.7 hours of classroom instruction on Japanese language plus 25 hours of lectures on Japanese culture and society, including field trips. See the attached flyer.

 

Costs:

306,000yen (approx. CAD$2900) payable to the host institution to cover tuition and administrative fee. The program cost does not include transportation costs (to and within Japan), or any other miscellaneous living expenses for the duration of the program.

 

Academic credits:

Contact the academic advising office of your program to find out if you can receive transfer credit hours towards your SMU degree.

 

Funding: 

Available for Canadian students.

[Summer Program] TMU Summer Program on Japanese & Japan Studies in 2023

Tokyo Metropolitan University is offering “TMU Summer Program on Japanese & Japan Studies in 2023” from July 4 to July 18, 2023.

〇 Contents of Program   

 

The 2-week program consists of 42 hours of Japanese language study, and 13.5 hours of Japan Studies.  

Students will be evaluated according to class participation, oral presentation and quizzes.  

A certificate will be issued upon completion of the program. 

 

〇 Program Length   

July 4 (Tuesday) –July18 (Tuesday), 2023 

 

〇 Japanese Language Placement Test  

Students will be allocated to classes based on their Japanese language level according “SPOT90” test. 

Before applying the program, students will have to take “SPOT90” test with free of charge.

Score of 31-40 → Beginner-level Japanese 

Score of 41-55 → Pre-intermediate-level Japanese 

Score of 56-70 → Intermediate-level Japanese

JPY 120,000 

 

*This program fee includes accommodation fee, education materials, and admission fees for field trips.  

  Not included in this fee are meals, airfare, traveler’s insurance, transportation between the University and accommodation, and daily expenses. 

  SMU tuition for the transfer credit hours is paid at SMU.

[Summer Program] Online Short-Term Intensive Japanese Program (2023)

Saint Mary’s partner institution in Japan, Rikkyo University, will offer two online Japanese language courses.

Dates: 

Summer 1: July 10-July 19, 2023 

Summer 2: July 24-August 2, 2023 

Each courses consists of 25 hours of instruction plus virtual cultural activities. See the attached flyer.

Costs:

50,000yen (approx. CAD$500) payable to the host institution to cover tuition and administrative fee.

Academic credits:

Contact the academic advising office of your program to find out if you can receive transfer credit hours towards your SMU degree.

Funding: 

Available for Canadian students.

Kansai Gaidai University Asian Studies Program Japanese Language Courses

Kansai Gaidai University is offering an online program in which SMU students can take up to two courses in winter 2023 (Jan 25-May 26 2023). Tuition is paid at the host university. Students may receive academic credits towards their SMU degree, provided that those transfer credits can be approved beforehand via the Letter of Permission Request Form submitted to the SMU Records Office.

Interested students should contact the Global Learning Office global@smu.ca by December 13 2022.

THE 2023 JAPANESE GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIP RECOMMENDED BY RIKKYO UNIVERSITY

Rikkyo University, SMU’s partner institution in Japan, is accepting applications from SMU graduate students for the MEXT Scholarship to study at Rikkyo University.

 

MEXT is funded by the Japanese government and covers economy airfare, tuition and monthly stipends of 143,000yen (approx. CAD$1400) for the 2023-24 academic year.

 

Applicants should be proficient in the language used in their study or research at Rikkyo University. Their graduate programs in Japanese are found at https://english.rikkyo.ac.jp/academics/#Graduate, and those in English are found at https://english.rikkyo.ac.jp/academics/english.html#Graduate.

Please note: Canadian citizens are not eligible; however, students of eligible countries attending Saint Mary’s are eligible to apply. Selected scholarship recipients will start their study at Rikkyo University as an exchange student from the 2023 Fall semester. They are then expected to apply for extension of the MEXT scholarship and successfully take and pass the entrance exam of one of Rikkyo University’s Graduate Schools, to proceed as a regular degree-seeking student from April 2025 at the latest.

Online Event Senpai Talk! -Stories about learning Japanese from senior Japanese language learners-

Are you a learner who wants to know how other learners of Japanese have studied and improved their Japanese?

In this event, we will be interviewing David-san, a student in Level 6 of the JAPAN FOUNDATION, TORONTO (JFT) Marugoto Course who has also passed JLPT N2, to hear about his experiences in learning Japanese. There will also be time for a Q&A session, so please feel free to ask any questions you may have.

TMU Winter Program on Japanese & Japan Studies in 2023

Tokyo Metropolitan University is offering the Japanese and Japan Studies Program in Tokyo, Japan, from January 11-27 2023. The program is open to students with no knowledge of Japanese as well as to those with an elementary-level knowledge. This program is offered in-person.
