Contents of Program: The 3-week program typically consists of Japanese Language, Japan Studies, Workshop, Field Studies, and Presentation. A certificate and grade report will be issued upon completion of the program. 

Transfer credits: Students may be able to earn credits to the extent that those credits are applicable to the program requirements of your SMU degree. Please meet with your academic advisor of your program (visit https://www.smu.ca/academics/academic-advising.html) to see if any of your remaining degree requirements can be completed at another university. If your advisor confirms that there is room for transfer credits in your degree, you will request approval to take courses for transfer credits by submitting a Letter of Permission Request Form (found here https://www.smu.ca/academics/student-forms.html) to the SMU Records Office as soon as your acceptance is confirmed.

Program Fee    JPY 140,000 (approx. CAD$1400) payable to the host university. (Fees are subject to change due to unforeseeable situations.) This program fee includes accommodation fee, education materials, and admission fees for field trips. Not included in this fee are meals, airfare, insurance, transportation between the University and accommodation, daily expenses, and $100 SMU Study abroad admin fee. If academic credits are earned, students pay SMU tuition at SMU for the transfer credit hours. Alternatively, if transfer credits are not sought, the student may receive recognition for extra-curricular experiences through the Co-Curricular Record (see here).

Summer School in Irish Studies, Cork, Ireland

University College Cork is excited to announce the 43rd International Summer School in Irish Studies, which will take place from Monday, 30th June to Friday, 25th July 2025.

2025 Summer Japanese Program, Rikkyo University, Japan

We are pleased to introduce the 2025 Summer Short-Term Intensive Japanese Program in Ikebukuro Campus (Tokyo). 

About the program
The entire program consists of about 46 hours of Japanese classes including cultural activities. Program capacity is limited and the maximum number of participants is 30 students. In this program, “Beginner” and “Elementary” level classes will be held. 

The classes are suitable for students who have no or little experience in learning Japanese or students who have learned Japanese for approximately one year and are at JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) N4/N5 level. *

*Please note that English is the primary language for communication in this program, and participants are expected to have a certain level of English ability. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion and an Official Transcript.

Participants need to check in at the designated accommodation on July 21, and check out on August 2, 2025.

Summer Exchange in Sweden

We are pleased to announce that the JU Summer School is being offered for the summer of 2025!

This year we will be offering 3 courses for students to choose between:

The courses are taught from 2 June - 27 June at the School of Engineering, and each course includes study visits to Swedish companies such as IKEA and Husqvarna.

There is also an optional (but highly recommended) social and cultural package which students can purchase, which provides a chance to experience the Swedish culture, traditions, explore areas outside of the city and get involved in after-school activities.

We can also provide JU student accommodation at an additional cost.

How to apply?
The application for the Summer School is open from 1 December 2024, the last day to apply is 1 April 2025.

Lake Constance Summer School (2025)

Registration for the Lake Constance Summer School 2025 is now open. Students who are interested in attending the Summer School, can register here.

The Lake Constance Summer School is an offer of the Lake Constance Arts & Sciences Association and includes a German language course and an afternoon program with cultural excursions, company presentations and sport activities.

Key Facts:

  • The program will begin online from July 28 to August 1, followed by in-person sessions from August 4 to August 22.

  • The German course is offered at levels A1 to B2.2, consists of 76 teaching units, and is worth 6 ECTS credits.

  • The fees cover all activities, such as sightseeing tours, BBQs, museum visits, etc.

  • Accommodation is not included, but can be booked separately at approximately €65 per night in a double room.

International Spring 2025 Course at Justus Liebig University, Giessen

The International Spring Course is held in March immediately before the start of our Summer Semester and offers 3 weeks of instruction in the German language, with a focus on basic grammar, cultural background, text production and communicative skills.

 The special character of the International Spring Course lies in its programme of individual mentoring. Not only does this approach help your students to get acquainted with the University, but it also introduces them to the city of Giessen and everyday life in Giessen as well as its environs. The International Spring Course also organises trips to diverse places all over Germany as well as interactive workshops. At the end of the Spring Course, participants receive a certificate indicating the number of ECTS points (3) obtained.

 The International Spring Course is not only ideal for exchange students of our partner university, but also for all international students who would like to improve their knowledge of German and get to know the university and the city of Giessen.

If you need a Schengen visa, the visa process for residents of Nova Scotia will be overseen by the Austrian Embassy in Ottawa (as referenced in “Where do I submit my visa application?” here https://canada.diplo.de/ca-en/consular-services/visa/where-to-submit-visa-application/1308212.)

  1. Please review the Austrian Embassy website thoroughly here to prepare your visa application: https://www.bmeia.gv.at/en/austrian-embassy-ottawa/travel-information-on-austria/entrance-and-residence/how-to-apply.

  2. When you book your visa application appointment, your application will be managed through VFS Global’s Visa Application Centre in Ottawa, Ontario, the official visa application centre for the Embassy of Australia in Canada.

Transfer credits

Students may be able to earn credits to the extent that those credits are applicable to the program requirements of your SMU degree. Please meet with your academic advisor of your program (visit https://www.smu.ca/academics/academic-advising.html) to see if any of your remaining degree requirements can be completed at another university. If your advisor confirms that there is room for transfer credits in your degree, you will request approval to take courses for transfer credits by submitting a Letter of Permission Request Form (found here https://www.smu.ca/academics/student-forms.html) to the SMU Records Office as soon as your acceptance is confirmed.

How to apply

Interested students should submit the SMU Exchange Program application to the Global Learning Office.

*To complete your application, you will:

  1. fill out your Study Abroad Application (https://studio.smu.ca/s/StudyAbroadApplication2021.pdf)

  2. write a one-page letter of intent (Tip: book an appointment with The Writing Centre or ask if personal statement workshops are coming up https://studio.smu.ca/wc-student-tutoring)

  3. print in pdf your unofficial transcript from banner and

  4. prepare your resume.

Once you have all four pieces of application documents, upload them at the application link here https://smuniversity.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_55UpfboKu5sImUe.

In addition to the above, please have two letters of reference emailed to Global@smu.ca. At least one letter needs to be written by your Saint Mary’s course instructor.

What happens after you apply?

Mitacs-JSPS Summer Program

As part of the Mitacs Globalink Research Award (GRA, see here), the Mitacs-JSPS Summer Program, offered in partnership with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), provides opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in Canada to pursue collaborative research in Japan.

 

Call for proposals:

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) (Japan—travel from Canada)

  • Deadline to submit: November 13, 2024

  • Level: PhD students, or postdoctoral fellows

  • Themes: All disciplines

  • Other requirements: Participants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada

  • Eligible institutions: All universities and research institutes in Japan based on JSPS projects

  • Co-funding: No financial contribution is required from the Canadian institution

  • Award amount: $3,000 CAD + 534,000 yen + flight costs

  • Application process and submission: Submit to Mitacs through the application portal here.
