[Winter Program] University of Seoul International Winter School (February 5-20, 2025)

University of Seoul (“UOS”), South Korea, is a partner institution of Saint Mary’s University. UOS is delighted to invite Saint Mary’s students to participate in the Seoul International Winter school which will take place in February 2025. This two-week program offers international students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Korean culture and explore various aspects of Korean society.

 

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

■ Dates: February 5–20, 2025

■ Special Lectures on Korea: Eight lectures covering topics such as K-Pop, K-Drama & Movies, K-Cafes, Food & Drink Culture, UNESCO World Heritage sites in Korea, K-Business, and the Korean economy.

■ Korean Language Classes: Intensive Korean language courses.

■ Cultural Activities: Field trips, welcome and farewell parties, "Design Your Own Seoul" activities, and interaction with Korean peer advocates.

[Winter Program] NEOMA Business School Winter Programme (January 6-17, 2025)

NEOMA Business School is offering a Winter Program titled “Sport Federations and Major Events Management Programme” in January 2025.

Now Open: Killam Fellowships Program 2025-26 Call

Study abroad for a semester in the United States!

The Killam Fellowships program is an exceptional opportunity for full-time Canadian undergraduate students to pursue an exchange program at American universities. Applicants chosen through a competitive selection process are awarded a US$6000 scholarship (approx. CAD$8400) for their exchange study in the US. Eligibility

To be considered for a Killam Fellowship to study in the United States, students must meet the following requirements at the time of application. The student must be:

  • a citizen of Canada,

  • a currently enrolled full-time undergraduate student in good standing

  • expected to be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student in good standing during the entire 2024-2025 academic year, should they be selected for an award,

  • expected to receive an undergraduate degree in the Spring of 2026 or beyond,

  • able to meet the eligibility requirements and regulations of the home university,

  • proficient in English,

  • in possession of a strong academic record, and

  • able to complete all steps of the application process prior to the published deadlines.

 

Application

Interested students should submit the following by email to the Global Learning Office (Miyuki.arai@smu.ca) by December 15 2024:

  1. Proof of Canadian citizenship (e.g., a passport scan)

  2. Curriculum Vitae (up to 3 pages, 12-point font, 1" margins)

  3. Unofficial academic record (i.e., a pdf printout from banner). Also submit unofficial transcripts from all post-secondary education institutions you’ve attended outside of SMU, if any.

  4. Personal Statement (1 page, single spaced, 12-point font, 1" margins) – In your statement,

  • Provide a narrative statement explaining why you want to study in the United States as a Killam Fellow.

  • Discuss what you hope to accomplish during your exchange in the United States and how the experience fits your current interests and future goals.

  • Highlight any experiences demonstrating your ability to adapt to other cultural settings, a willingness to share with or learn from others of different national identities, and your ability to serve as an ambassador for Canada.

  • Provide a unique statement.

5. Abroad term, expected graduation date, references and host school preferences: In a Word document, please provide:

    • Preferred abroad term, e.g., Fall term 2025, Winter term 2026, One academic year (Be aware that preference will be given to students requesting a single-term placement)

    • Month and year of completion of your current degree program

  • The selection is highly competitive. Even if your application is chosen, you may not be given a placement at one of the preferred schools.

  • Your exchange study at an American partner is only possible when chosen as a Killam Fellow.

 

Credits and tuition

Academic credits may be earned to the extent that they are applicable to your SMU degree. Book an advising appointment with your academic advisor to review which of the remaining program requirements may be completed on a transfer-credit basis and how the Letter of Permission Request Form works for the transfer of credits. You will pay SMU tuition at SMU for the transfer credit hours.

Number of students to be nominated by SMU for Direct Exchange:

up to three full-year candidates (or six one-semester candidates)

 

What happens after December 15:

The Global Learning Office will contact applicants who are receiving SMU’s nomination and will ask them to submit a complete Killam Fellowship application online by the end of January 2025. Guidance and instructions will be provided.

 

In March 2025, selected candidates will be determined by an independent adjudication committee comprised of faculty members from participating universities and senior officials from the Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States of America (“Fulbright Canada”). The committee will rank all candidates based on their proposed program of study, their personal statement, their record of academic achievement, and their letters of reference.

[Winter Program] Sapporo University (“SU”) Winter Program (February 12-22, 2025)

Sapporo University is offering a Winter Program in February 2025. Have a unique winter experience through learning Japanese language and culture in Sapporo City, the heart of Hokkaido, Japan!

 

The program welcomes students from Sapporo University’s partner schools around the world! The program will run with 12-20 participants (if fewer than 12 students apply, the program will be cancelled).

This program is open to students who can read and write Hiragana and Katakana.

 

Contents of Program   

  • Japanese language classes : 90 min × 17 sessions (25.5 hours)

Call for Applications: Re-imagining Development

About the Gathering 

ACIC’s Re-imagining Development, invites post-secondary students and young professionals in fields of global solidarity/international development to participate in a gathering of the unlearning, co-learning, and re-imagining of ‘international development’.

In a time where global solitary is more important than ever, join us in exploring alternatives to development that center global AND local solidarity, decolonization, restorative justice, and more. This gathering will serve as an opportunity to learn important skills and knowledge related to practice in global solidarity sectors.

To foster a learning environment at the gathering a mix of mediums will be used, including: restorative panels, virtual speakers (to bring in subject matter experts from outside the region), small and large group discussions/workshops, site visits to places of interest related to gathering topics, etc.).

Eligibility

  • Be living in Atlantic Canada

Mitacs-JSPS Summer Program

As part of the Mitacs Globalink Research Award (GRA, see here), the Mitacs-JSPS Summer Program, offered in partnership with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), provides opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in Canada to pursue collaborative research in Japan.

Call for Applications: The UArctic Entrepreneurship Fund

The UArctic Entrepreneurship Fund is accepting grant applications until October 31, 2024. The UArctic Entrepreneurship Fund is an initiative that complements other existing prize funds with a seed-fund program, providing training and mentorship, and encouraging innovation and solutions on a local level.

 

The fund is open to any individual with an incubator-stage product or service that directly benefits the Arctic environment or Arctic communities and has a positive, demonstrable impact on the Arctic. We especially encourage applications from Arctic Indigenous and/or Northern-based entrepreneurs. Expected grant disbursement amounts are in the range of $2,000 to $5,000 USD, though exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.

Call for Applications: Travel Support for Canadian UArctic Members

Saint Mary’s University is a member institution of the University of the Arctic (UArctic). UArctic is pleased to announce a call for applications under the Travel Support for Canadian UArctic Members.

 

This initiative aims to foster engagement and collaboration of Northern Canadians, including Indigenous peoples, within the UArctic network, with a specific focus on supporting participation and perspectives in UArctic activities and events. Priority for funding will be for Northern and Indigenous UArctic member faculty, students, community knowledge holders, Chairs and Thematic Network leads.

 

This program is made possible through the Global Arctic Leadership Initiative and supported by Global Affairs Canada.

 

The fund will provide up to $5,000 CAD in travel support to:

·        Students, faculty, and staff attending Arctic-related conferences, workshops, and meetings.

·        Institutionally-sponsored travel support for community knowledge holders.

·        UArctic Chairs and Thematic Network Leads representing UArctic at Arctic-related events.

 

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis and reviewed according to the following schedule:

English Teaching Volunteers for Refugees (Costa Rica)

“We are excited to introduce our new initiative, GLP with Refugees, in partnership with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) under the social responsibility course of action that celebrates inclusion and ratifies our commitment to deliver the highest positive impact in the region. About GLP with Refugees:

GLP with Refugees is a new volunteer program developed in conjunction with UNHCR and Living the Inclusion division in Costa Rica; our primary objective is to join efforts to positively impact the employment and educational opportunities for refugees, asylum seekers, and stateless persons in Costa Rica, in line with Sustainable Development Goals 8, 10, and 17.

We aim to develop and implement by October 2024 an English Program for students under refugee status, where we are looking for volunteers, for the role of English Teacher Volunteers/ESL instructors, that can assist virtually or in-person by developing the English academic program, teach, assist lessons, participate in students evaluations and curriculum materials and more.

Program objectives:

  • Course Development: Designing a comprehensive English course plan that takes students from basic proficiency to levels acceptable for the Costa Rican labor market, with flexibility for virtual delivery to meet the needs of our beneficiaries.

  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Establishing a regular monitoring cadence with support from GLP & UNHCR to ensure compliance with agreements and conducting evaluations to contribute with annual assessment of the program’s impact under the umbrella of the Living Inclusion Program. 

  • Managing a Positive, Safe and Inclusive Environment: Ensuring continuous engagement, respect, tolerance, empathy and support for students, volunteers and team members throughout the program period.

“The Youth Futures Exchange Program is organized by the Cagayan State University to bring together young leaders from various educational institutions to engage in meaningful dialogues, cultural exchanges, and collaborative projects that address pressing global issues. All summer school students can join an extracurricular trip to the Finland's Lakeland region. Youth Challenge International (YCI) has launched new positions and start dates for Canadians (citizens and permanent residents) to gain professional experience in the international development and social entrepreneurship sectors through a HerStart Fellowship. YCI is currently recruiting for HerStart International Fellowship positions to collaborate for 3 months with our impact-driven teams in Ghana, Tanzania, and Uganda!

UIP, the University of Ulsan’s 4-week International Summer Program, is designed for enthusiastic international students seeking to immerse themselves in the depth of Korean culture, history, society, business, and Korean language.

 

Course:

The UIP program consists of Korean studies (Korean politics, economy, etc.) taught in English as well as Korean language classes. The program also offers cultural experiential activities and field trips to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Korea.

The theme of the 2024 summer program is the “Art of Japanese Language and Culture”.

Transfer credits:

Students may be able to earn credits to the extent that those credits are applicable to the program requirements of your SMU degree. Please meet with your academic advisor of your program (visit https://www.smu.ca/academics/academic-advising.html) to see if any of your remaining degree requirements can be completed at another university. If your advisor confirms that there is room for transfer credits in your degree, you will request approval to take courses for transfer credits by submitting a Letter of Permission Request Form (found here https://www.smu.ca/academics/student-forms.html) to the SMU Records Office as soon as your acceptance is confirmed.

How to apply:

Interested students should submit the SMU Exchange Program application* by February 15 2024 to the Global Learning Office.

*To complete your application, you will:

  1. fill out your Study Abroad Application (https://studio.smu.ca/s/StudyAbroadApplication2021.pdf)

  2. write a one-page letter of intent (Tip: book an appointment with The Writing Centre or ask if personal statement workshops are coming up https://studio.smu.ca/wc-student-tutoring)

  3. print in pdf your unofficial transcript from banner and

  4. prepare your resume.

Once you have all four pieces of application documents, upload them at the application link here https://smuniversity.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_55UpfboKu5sImUe.

In addition to the above, please have two letters of reference emailed to Global@smu.ca. At least one letter needs to be written by your Saint Mary’s course instructor.

What happens after you apply?

If you are selected, you will be nominated to the host university by the SMU Global Learning Office, and the rest of the pre-departure steps will be explained.
