Mitacs-JSPS Summer Program

As part of the Mitacs Globalink Research Award (GRA, see here), the Mitacs-JSPS Summer Program, offered in partnership with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), provides opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in Canada to pursue collaborative research in Japan.

 

Call for proposals:

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) (Japan—travel from Canada)

  • Deadline to submit: November 13, 2024

  • Level: PhD students, or postdoctoral fellows

  • Themes: All disciplines

  • Other requirements: Participants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada

  • Eligible institutions: All universities and research institutes in Japan based on JSPS projects

  • Co-funding: No financial contribution is required from the Canadian institution

  • Award amount: $3,000 CAD + 534,000 yen + flight costs

Announcement from Mykolas Romeris University, Lithuania

Lithuanian State scholarhips for Full-time Master degree studies

The Call for the year 2023 has been launched by the Educational exchanges support foundation.  Mykolas Romeris University encourages SMU students in their last year of undergraduate studies or master degree students to apply for master degree at Mykolas Romeris University and simultaniously apply for the Lithuanian state scholarhips for Full-time Master degree studies. [Summer Program] LUT Summer School at LUT University, Finland

 ARE YOUR LOOKING FOR A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE NEXT SUMMER?

 

What about travelling to Finland for LUT Summer School and gaining a deep understanding of contemporary, relevant topics in the field of Climate Change, Sustainability, Creativity, Combination of Business and Technology, all the while experiencing the beauty of Finland in the summer?

 

LUT University is a Saint Mary’s partner institution in Lappeenranta, Finland. Saint Mary’s students are invited to take part in their LUT Summer School taking place from June 26-July 15 2023 (3 weeks). Credits from the program are transferrable to the extent that they fulfill the student’s degree requirements and need to be approved by the student’s academic advisor via a Letter of Permission before the program commences. Tuition is paid at SMU for the transfer credit hours (although the flyer states otherwise).

 

Bachelor and Master students in the fields of technology and business are invited to apply, but LUT Summer School offers mainly Master’s level courses. Please check the course descriptions and prerequisites at https://www.lut.fi/en/studies/lut-summer-school/course-contents, and email global@smu.ca if there are questions or inquiries.

2023 Japanese Studies Students MEXT Scholarship

This Japanese Government scholarship is intended for students who are currently undergraduates at a foreign (non-Japanese) university majoring in a Japanese language and/or culture-related field.

The deadline for submitting applications is 5:00 p.m. EST, Tuesday, February 7, 2023.

Other MEXT Scholarships

There are two other scholarships, the 2024 Research Students Scholarship and the 2024 Undergraduate Students Scholarship. Further information will be made available in April 2023. 

MEXT Scholarships Information Session

The Consulate General of Japan in Montreal’s MEXT Scholarship Desk will be holding an information session about the MEXT Scholarships as follows:

THE 2023 JAPANESE GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIP RECOMMENDED BY RIKKYO UNIVERSITY

Rikkyo University, SMU’s partner institution in Japan, is accepting applications from SMU graduate students for the MEXT Scholarship to study at Rikkyo University.

 

MEXT is funded by the Japanese government and covers economy airfare, tuition and monthly stipends of 143,000yen (approx. CAD$1400) for the 2023-24 academic year.

 

Applicants should be proficient in the language used in their study or research at Rikkyo University. Their graduate programs in Japanese are found at https://english.rikkyo.ac.jp/academics/#Graduate, and those in English are found at https://english.rikkyo.ac.jp/academics/english.html#Graduate.

Please note: Canadian citizens are not eligible; however, students of eligible countries attending Saint Mary’s are eligible to apply. Selected scholarship recipients will start their study at Rikkyo University as an exchange student from the 2023 Fall semester. They are then expected to apply for extension of the MEXT scholarship and successfully take and pass the entrance exam of one of Rikkyo University’s Graduate Schools, to proceed as a regular degree-seeking student from April 2025 at the latest.

• DATES: January 23rd - February 10th, 2023

• CAMPUS : PARIS from January 23 to February 1 AND REIMS from February 2 to February 10, 2023 The programme is this year divided between both cities.

• FORMAT: Full-time, with mandatory social events organised as extra curricular activities

• TOTAL NUMBER OF ECTS: 12 (roughly equated to 6 credit hours at SMU, to be confirmed by SMU Records Office)

Mitacs Globalink Research Award Program: Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)

Below are the most recent updates to the Mitacs Globalink Research Award (GRA) program. These updates pertain to a call for proposals with our partner Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), a new version of the application now available and an update regarding invoicing of projects through the allocation stream.

 

Current opportunities — call for proposals:

 

1. Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) (Japan – travel from Canada)

  • Dates: September 29, 2022 to November 30, 2022 at 5 p.m. PT

  • Level: Full-time master's and PhD students, postdoctoral fellows

  • Themes: All disciplines

  • Other requirements: Interns must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada

  • Eligible institutions: complete list here: Japanese national, public or private universities, Inter-University Research Institute Corporation, National Laboratories, Prefectural Research Institutes, Independent Administrative Institutions, Non-Profit Organizations, Corporations etc.

  • Co-funding: No financial contribution is required from the Canadian university

  • Award amount: JSPS arranges round-trip airfare and insurance. Mitacs and JSPS provide an allowance for the student or postdoctoral fellow (equivalent to 534,000 yen in total). Host supervisors are eligible for a research support allowance.

  • Duration: 9 weeks

  • Internship dates: Projects must take place during the period set by the JSPS. The dates for the 2023 program are early June to mid-August, 2023. More details can be found here. Note that dates are tentative and may be subject to change.

Mitacs is offerings up to $6,000 to graduate students to conduct a research project in India via their Globalink Research Award (GRA) program. The details are as follows:
