The LUT Summer School is a three-week academic event offering intensive courses at Master's- and Bachelor´s-level classes in sustainability, climate action, marketing, management, and inventive thinking.

Course information

You can take a single course or combine the courses, provided that the schedules do not overlap and the prerequisites for attendance are met.

 

Week 1, 24−28 June 2024:

· Critical Issues in International Business and Entrepreneurship – anticipating global challenges managerially and entrepreneurially (suitable for postgraduates;

Pre-requisites: No formal prerequisites. Previous courses in entrepreneurship, international business and management are beneficial but not mandatory.

· Systematic Creativity and TRIZ Basics (suitable for postgraduates);

Pre-requisites: Preferably, students of engineering major or bachelor’s degree in non-technical studies.

 

Week 2, 1-5 July 2024

· Globalizing business: How to become a global company? (suitable for postgraduates)

Pre-requisites: Previous studies in international business (e.g. Introduction to International Business or International Business Strategy)

· Climate Action – Advanced Seminar Workshop Course (suitable for BSc and MSc students)

Pre-requisites: Previous LUT organized Climate Action MOOC-courses (Power to X Modules, Sustainable design and production Modules, Solutions for Carbon Neutral Transport Modules)

 

Week 3, 8-12 July 2024

· Creativity, Innovation, Entrepreneurship in New Product Development (suitable postgraduates)

Pre-requisites: previous studies in business recommended.

· Sustainability transition of food systems (suitable for BSc, MSc)

Pre-requisites: No formal prerequisites. Previous courses in social sciences are beneficial but not mandatory.

 

Fees and costs

SMU students pay SMU tuition at SMU via the banner account. The amount of SMU tuition is determined based on the number of transfer credit hours earned from the program. The host university will not charge a separate tuition fee.

 

Accommodation fee in Lappeenranta Student Housing Foundation (LOAS) apartments: 1 week EUR 130, 2 weeks EUR 240, 3 weeks EUR 340 + EUR 40 LOAS office fee.

 

All summer school students can join an extracurricular trip to the Finland's Lakeland region. The fee is EUR 210 which includes all activities, accommodation, local transportation, all meals and water.

 

Cancellation policy: The LUT Summer School will retain a document processing fee of EUR 70. After 31 May 2024 the fee is non-refundable.

 

Students will also be responsible for international travel, insurance, $100 study abroad admin fee and personal expenses.

 

Immigration:

Students requiring a visa should apply for a tourist visa by contacting the nearest Embassy of Finland or consulate. For the visa application, the student has to provide a formal Certificate of Admission. As the Certificate of Admission is only issued on receipt of full payment.

ESSCA Ecole de Management is inviting Saint Mary’s students to participate in their Summer Programme 2024 in Hungary.

 About ESSCA

University of Ulsan in Ulsan, Korea, is inviting Saint Mary’s students to participate in their Ulsan International Program.

UIP, the University of Ulsan’s 4-week International Summer Program, is designed for enthusiastic international students seeking to immerse themselves in the depth of Korean culture, history, society, business, and Korean language.

 

Course:

The UIP program consists of Korean studies (Korean politics, economy, etc.) taught in English as well as Korean language classes. The program also offers cultural experiential activities and field trips to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Korea.

 

Target group:

Undergraduate students in good academic standing who will have completed 1 year of Bachelor studies by the end of Winter 2024.

 

Fees and costs:

Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU) offers students from partner universities with a 3-week program on intensive Japanese language and culture.

The 3-week program consists of Japanese language study, Japan Studies, Home Visit, Career Workshops, and field trips.

The Japanese language classes at three levels (Survival, Basic, and Pre-intermediate) are designed for those who have just started learning Japanese or want to accelerate their language study.

Target group:

Undergraduate students in good academic standing who will have completed 1 year of Bachelor studies by the end of Winter 2024.

Fees and costs:

SMU students pay SMU tuition at SMU via the banner account. The amount of SMU tuition is determined based on the number of transfer credit hours earned from the program.

The host university will not charge a separate tuition fee; however, students pay 140,000yen (approx. CAD$1,300) at the host institution which covers accommodation costs and course materials.

[Summer Program] Frankfurt Summer Universities 2024 June 23-July 6 2024

Frankfurt Summer Universities is offered at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences in Frankfurt, Germany. They look forward to welcoming international students into their summer program this summer!

 Fees and costs:

SMU students pay a program fee of 850euros (approx. CAD$1,240) at the host institution. Students who are accepted before April 7 2024 will benefit from a reduced fee of 750euros (approx. CAD$1,100). The program fee covers 2 weeks of academic courses, course materials, public transportation in Frankfurt, and opening/closing events.

SMU will not charge a separate tuition fee.

Students will also be responsible for accommodation, meals, international travel, insurance, $100 study abroad admin fee and personal expenses.

CAD$850) for double occupancy and 450euros (approx. CAD$660) for a quadruple room (3-4 people). They cannot guarantee your preferred housing choice.

There are two specialized tracks to choose from based on your interests:

Each track consists of two courses. Students can take both courses in a track or choose one course in a track.

SMU students pay tuition and registration fee of 2,100,000 Korean Won (approx. CAD$2110) at the host institution, University of Seoul.

Students will also be responsible for housing*, meals, international travel, insurance, $100 study abroad admin fee and personal expenses. *UOS supports on-campus housing fees for first 60 students who are nominated by the home university and complete tuition payment before April 30.

[Summer Program] Summer School on Sustainability and Behavioral Economics 2024

August 5 to September 1 2024

University of Kassel in Kassel, Germany, is inviting Saint Mary’s students to participate in their summer school on Sustainability and Behavioral Economics.  The program is offered by Uni Kassel’s Faculty of Economics and Management, and is most suited to students who will have completed two years of undergraduate studies studying Economics, Management, and other related disciplines. Course outlines:

 

Transfer credits:

SMU students can earn the following credits to the extent that those are applicable to their SMU Program Requirements AND with approval from the SMU Records Office via a Letter of Permission Request Form:

  • ECON3901 “Experiments on Sustainable Behaviour” for the Experiments on Sustainable Behaviour

  • GRMN1101 “German for Absolute Beginners” for the German course

 

Tuition:

SMU students pay SMU tuition as normal at SMU for the transfer credit hours.

No additional tuition will be assessed by the host university.

 

Non-tuition costs:

Students are expected to pay for their travel to and from Kassel and travel insurance as well as living expenses and accommodation while in Kassel.

Depending on the student’s citizenship, they may need to travel to a visa processing centre in another Canadian city to apply in person for a visa to enter Schengen countries. Consult the German mission website here and budget accordingly.

[Summer Program] ESSCA Summer Programs 2023

Saint Mary’s partner university in France, ESSCA Ecole de Management, is offering the following summer programs in France and Hungary (https://www.essca.fr/en/international/summer-programme). These programs take place from mid-June to mid-July, and are intended for both undergraduate and graduate students in Marketing, Management, European Studies, Humanity, Society, and French culture.

 

  • Angers Summer Programme “French Culture and Identity in the Loire Valley”

This course, aimed at undergraduate students, is an intensive and in-depth introduction to French culture and history. The course is complemented by visits to some of France’s outstanding cultural heritage sites such as Castles of the Loire Valley, Cointreau distillery, bunkers of Pignerolle. The programme is taught entirely in English.

 

  • Paris Summer Programme “Luxury Brand Management” and “Cross- Cultural Management and Leadership”

The Paris Summer Program offers courses on the themes of luxury and management in one of the world’s most vibrant city. Designed for undergraduate business students, classes will be complemented by some visits to the Yves Saint Laurent museum, the Louvre or on a boat trip on the Seine. Instruction is in English.

 

  • Aix-en-Provence Summer Programme “Developing Sustainable Experience in Cultural Tourism in Provence”

This program offers students the experience of discovering the French Provence through courses on tourism and culture. Students may participate in a wine tasting or attend the Aix Festival, Arles Festival or Avignon Festival.

 

  • Angers-Strasbourg Summer Programme “European Studies with our Chair Jean Monnet”

This program, aimed at undergraduates, takes place the first two weeks in Angers, and the next two in Strasbourg. Students will also discover Paris for a week-end. The courses cover subjects related to the study of Europe.

 

  • Budapest Summer Programme “Business Management” and “International business and leadership”

The program, located in the dynamic capital of Budapest, is open to graduate business students and includes company visits and cultural tours throughout Hungary.

 

Costs

SMU tuition is payable at SMU for the transfer credit hours (i.e., SMU students will not be assessed additional tuition fees by the host university). Students will be also responsible for the organizational costs (incl housing in most cases) and a 50euro fee to the host university as well as for meals, international travel and personal expenses. Non-Canadian students may require a visa to enter the host country.

Interested students should submit the SMU Exchange Program application by March 15. Once selected, you will be directed to the host university’s application process for further steps.

Do you have any great pictures from your study abroad experiences? Submit your entries to the Global Learning & Intercultural Support Office and enter the 16th Annual Study Abroad Photo Contest!

The photos could be taken by you, or you could be the subject of the picture while you were overseas in global learning activities from SMU. You can submit up to 6 photos in total.

Prize: Your photo will be featured in the 2023 Study Abroad Photo Calendar, and you will also receive a free copy.

Note: Photos may also be used for other promotions and the SMU website.
