Are you a learner who wants to know how other learners of Japanese have studied and improved their Japanese?

In this event, we will be interviewing David-san, a student in Level 6 of the JAPAN FOUNDATION, TORONTO (JFT) Marugoto Course who has also passed JLPT N2, to hear about his experiences in learning Japanese. There will also be time for a Q&A session, so please feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Become an EAL Volunteer Tutor

Are you interested in volunteering with us to help newcomers settle in Nova Scotia? Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS) is looking for volunteer EAL tutors! We match EAL tutors with our clients who want to improve their spoken and written English and prepare for English language proficiency/professional exams, Canadian Citizenship Tests, etc.

ACIC Symposium: Celebrate International Day of Peace

Celebrate International Day of Peace with ACIC!
ACIC invites you to register for ACIC Symposium 2022: Peace Through The Looking Glass: Reflections on Justice, Equity and Strong Institutions.

ACIC’s Symposium 2022 will examine the ways justice, equity and institutions are at the core of sustainable development and can both support and hinder peace-building efforts around the world. Join us on October 28 and 29, in person in Halifax, or online, as we explore the intersections of peace, environment, education, consumerism and human rights. Understanding the importance of Sustainable Development Goal #16 in helping to safeguard peace, we will explore the concept of peace from a multitude of perspectives and consider the intersection of peace with sustainable global development both locally and globally.

The Symposium will bring together international cooperation practitioners, environmentalists, youth, Indigenous leaders, human-rights activists, feminists, local governments, civil society leaders, issue-specific experts, advocates and academics to encourage dialogue across sectors and cultures. The Symposium is rooted in fostering a learning environment through a combination of keynote sessions, panel discussions, workshops and opportunities for connection, that will strengthen individual and collective capacity to engage Atlantic Canadians and provide them with the tools to recentre peace as a critical value at a time when global solidarity is challenged at every turn.

The Youth Stream provides an opportunity for participants aged 18-29 years, to connect with their peers and professionals working in the field of International Cooperation, as they attend the ACIC Symposium. Pariticipants will engage in mentorship and networking opportunities, learn about topics related to the symposium theme of justice, equity, and strong institutions, all the while reflecting on how this work impacts communities at the local and global levels. Stories are powerful: they weave people and experiences together and shape how we see the world. Knowing the impact and value of a well-told story, ACIC’s PhotoVoices Program empowers youth to share the narratives they want to tell through photos. Through the program, Atlantic Canadian youth and youth from the Global South use photos to share their stories, build skills, explore various topics related to social justice, learn from experts in the field, and so much more. Why get involved?

  • Share, network, and collaborate with like-minded youth living in Atlantic Canada and the Global South.

  • Develop skills in photography, communication, social justice action, storytelling, and more! 

  • Opportunity to learn how to address community needs, concerns, planning, and other lived realities

Upon completion of the program youth will receive a certificate of completion and a $250 honorarium for the time and commitment.

University of Waterloo's conference “Water as a Foundation for Healthy Communities and Sustainable Livelihoods”

This three-day international conference (7am to 10am EST daily) will explore progress against the UN’s SDGs at the intersection of water, health, food and gender through the work of international experts and early career scholars from Canada, Africa and Asia who will share research experiences and lessons learned from a variety of multi-sectoral projects led by academic and local partners.

 

The program is filled with lively panel discussions among QES scholars, partner institutes and research placement partners. On each day they have invited a high-profile keynote speaker who addresses the main theme(s) of the day. The conference targets academics, practitioners and policymakers.

ACIC's Public Engagement Funds

Atlantic Council for International Cooperation is launching a call for applications for the Individual Member’s and Member Organization’s Public Engagement Funds. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, and all public engagement activities must be completed before March 2023.

Peace and Friendship Longhouse Build & Teachings

Join the Tatamagouche Centre on Thursday, August 4, 2022, from 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM at their Peace and Friendship gathering. This event is focused on building a longhouse through longhouse teachings with Wabanaki Elders. The weekend will include a ceremony, a sacred circle and widening the circle of Indigenous and settler youth engagement in Indigenous rights and in living as treaty people. Acknowledging the land, and value the gifts and teachings which come to us through our relations with different ages, ancestry, colour, belief, place of origin, and races. The teachings of respect, relationships, responsibility, and reverence will be offered so that the younger generation may continue and strengthen the circle of understanding and caring. On August 27, join the Tatamagouche Centre from 5 PM until 7:30 PM for an evening of delicious local food with local musicians and drinks! Megan Miller, Hospitality and Local Relations, is leading this event. Tickets are $30 (true cost), however, we have pay-what-you-can tickets for those who might face financial barriers. Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC) has shared the resources about anti-racism below.

As part of our #Tuesdays4Justice campaign, we share resources that can be accessed and used to spark discussions and thought on how to be better allies, and move towards anti-racism in development work locally and globally. Scholarships for Canadian academics, students and professionals: Canada-China Scholars’ Exchange Program, 2022-2023

 

Global Affairs Canada and the Chinese Ministry of Education are offering short-term scholarships to Canadians wishing to study abroad in China. Scholarships are awarded for studies, research, language studies or a combination of studies and language studies at participating Chinese institutions.

 

  • Program name: Canada-China Scholars’ Exchange Program

  • Funding organizations: Global Affairs Canada and the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China

  • Target audiences: Canadian students (college, undergraduate and graduate levels in Canada); Canadian faculty members and research staff at a post-secondary institution in Canada; Canadian mid-career professionals

  • Number of scholarships: Over 20

  • Duration: 4 to 12 months for students; and 8 weeks to 12 months for faculty members and mid-career professionals

  • Inclusions: Airfare, tuition fees, monthly living stipend, on-campus accommodation and medical insurance

  • Deadline: January 20, 2022

Funding Opportunity for University Collaborative Research on Implementation of The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (IOHE) launches a seed fund to support collaborative research between IOHE members on the implementation of the UN SDGs.

In line with IOHE’s mission to contribute to the transformation of HEIs to respond to their social and political contexts through the creation of, and support to, Inter-American collaboration, the goals of this call are twofold:

  • Goal 1. To promote collaboration and partnerships among IOHE members, and between members and local communities to advance the implementation of the UN Agenda 2030 through the creation of knowledge that is locally applicable and globally relevant; and

  • Goal 2. To learn from exemplary partnership models between HEIs and communities to further the SDGs, which can be effectively adapted for use by others in the IOHE network

Faculty Mobility for Partnership Building Program

The Faculty Mobility for Partnership Building Program’s 2022-2023 competition is now open. This program offers grants to full-time faculty for short-term teaching and/or research activities in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Faculty Mobility for Partnership Building Program aims to support Canadian postsecondary institutions that are either developing new collaboration and/or student exchange agreements or strengthening existing agreements with ELAP-eligible institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Priority may be given to first-time candidates, institutions developing new partnerships, and institutions with limited previous experience in international collaborations.

 

·         Program name: Faculty Mobility for Partnership Building Program

·         Funding organization: Government of Canada

·         Target audiences: Canadian postsecondary institutions and full-time professors

·         Duration: 3 to 8 weeks in FY2022-23 (April 1 2022-March 31 2023)

·         Inclusions: airfare, living expenses, health insurance, visa or work permit fees and other eligible expenses

·         Deadline: December 2, 2021 (please submit all application materials to Miyuki.arai@smu.ca by Nov 26)

·         Maximum grant value per candidate: CAD 7,000

·         Final selection and results announcement: February 2022

 

The Global Learning and Intercultural Support Office will apply on behalf of eligible candidates by completing and submitting the online application form.
